Melamine Faced Boards, also known as MFB, are wood based panels laminated with melamine impregnated papers.
MFB are manufactured by laminating these wood based panels and impregnated papers under high heat and pressure, between specialized hard chrome caul embossing plates, to provide a wear and water resistant surface finish.
Melamine impregnated papers are available as plain colours, high quality woodgrain designs or various other designs and images including digital prints.
Our surface prints are designed by the finest designers in Europe and printed on the most advanced high speed printing lines available, producing the most authentic fashion designs available.
The substrate or core of our laminated products can take the form of either particleboard or MDF. Upgraded boards are available in 12mm, 16mm, 18mm, 22mm, and 30 / 32mm thicknesses in any of our standard embosses, namely Textured, Alpine & Woodline finish. Standard sheet size is 2745x1830mm.
Particleboard, also known as chipboard, is a composite wood based panel manufactured by compressing wood particles and resin under heat, resulting in a panel that is durable, dimensionally stable and consistent throughout.
Upgraded particleboard is available from Sternwood as Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC) or in a raw form with a sanded surface. Particleboard’s main use is for internal applications such as kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, offices, shopfitting, furniture and various other commercial and domestic applications.
Particleboard is available in 8mm, 12mm, 16mm, 18mm, 22mm and 32mm thicknesses in a standard sheet size of 2745x1830mm.
Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is a composite wood based panel manufactured from fine wood fibers and resin, which are bonded together under heat and pressure. MDF has a structured uniform density throughout with a fine and smooth surface.
These qualities give MDF the machining ability required to produce complex designs.
MDF is available from Sternwood in a raw form or with a melamine faced decorative overlay either double or single faced.
MDF is available in 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 16mm, 18mm, 22mm and 30mm thicknesses in a standard sheet size of 2745x1830mm.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is a product made from thin strands of timber layered in oriented layers, bonded by a synthetic resin. Boards do not contain natural wood defects (knots, cracks, etc.). Chip size in the surface layer shows off the natural structure, color and rustic appearance of natural wood.
The OSB we source has been developed and manufactured in line with the current demand for healthy living, focusing primarily on organic materials.
Manufactured using suitable timber and adhesives, our OSB meets the most stringent requirements of environmental buildings. Strands are bound with a formaldehyde-free adhesive. Formaldehyde emissions are limited to the natural content of formaldehyde in solid wood.
OSB is available in 9mm, 12mm & 18mm thicknesses in a standard sheet size of 2440x1220mm.
Plywood is a wood based panel manufactured from thin sheets of wood veneer bonded together by an adhesive. Plywood has good dimensional stability under conditions of varying moisture and does not split as easily as conventional wood.
Plywood is available from Sternwood primarily in Pine with a grade C+/C, which is ideal for shuttering and other structural uses.
Plywood is available in 18mm thickness in a standard sheet size of 2440x1220mm. Other thicknesses and grades available on request.
Hardboard is a high-density wood based panel manufactured from wood fibres, using no additional adhesives. Hardboard offers excellent machining and working properties.
It can be shaped and bent, it is impact resistant and will not split, splinter or crack.
Hardboard is supplied with one side smooth and the other rough.
Brown Hardboard available in 3mm thickness in standard sheet size of 2440x1220mm. Single Face White Backing Boards available in the following sizes 2440x1220x2.7mm and 2750x1830x3mm.
Sternwood has a state of the art board optimising, cutting and edging facility in Port Elizabeth, offering customers the option of having panels cut to specific sizes and edged to their requirements in standard or impact edging.
Corner shelving and frames are cut out using a CNC overhead router, ensuring neat corners and no crossover cut lines. Hinge hole drilling is also available to ensure a one stop panel supply facility for all kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, shop fitting and office furniture requirements.
Our modern precision equipment sourced from market leading European manufacturers, using both diamond and carbide tooling, allows accurate sizing and neat edging to avoid unnecessary comebacks.
Sternwood manufactures quality high definition pressform panels (PVC Wrap Doors) using the latest European technology. Sternwood was one of the first manufacturers of pressform panels in South Africa and has gradually learnt and perfected the process over the years.
Our panels are pressed under the correct temperature and pressure throughout our pressing process. The standard range of foils we use are manufactured by the highest quality manufacturers in Europe, ensuring a quality finished product for our customers.
Sternwood manufacturers various quality wood based panel components in high volumes using the latest European equipment. Our state of the art CNC machinery allows accurate manufacturing of large quantities of repetitive items.
Components manufactured include items for the motor industry, shop fitting, household components, packaging components and various other commercial and domestic items.
Our capabilities include:
These capabilities can all be completed within a single programming operation.
Components are machined out of melamine faced board, plywood, MDF, particleboard and OSB.
